While both methods lead pretty much to the same results, they are both different in method and accuracy of their outputs. Both methods create 3D models. Photogrammetry creates a 3D model from 2D images but does not penetrate beyond an object, while LiDAR has the ability to penetrate beyond trees, buildings and beneath the surface. LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology is based on laser beams. It shoots laser and measures the time it takes for the light to return. Photogrammetry is based on images that are transformed from 2D into 3D models. The limitation of photogrammetry is that it can only generate points based on what the camera sensor can detect illuminated by ambient light.
